Inability to open desktop files after install of Windows XP SP2

After installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, I get an error message whenever I try to open something from my desktop such as My Computer or My Documents. I then tried to open up Control Panel from the start menu to try to reinstall SP2 and received the same message: "SysFader explorer.exe application error 0x02200065 referenced memory at 0x00000000 memory could not be read." Any suggestions?
This could be a legitimate error in the fade-in/fade-out functionality of Windows. However, I've seen reports of malware causing similar problems. I would recommend scanning your system thoroughly with one or more of both anti-virus and anti-spyware software. If nothing turns up, this could warrant a reinstall of SP2 or call to Microsoft.
