Settings to check when you can't connect

We have a server that won't allow me to connect to it from anywhere, even though I belong to all the same groups as the other IT people. What should we be looking for?
This is a fairly broad scenario, but here are some things I would look at. First, can others connect? If so, then your problem is likely a permissions issue, and I would double check all of them. Even though you may be a member of the same groups, someone may have granted direct permissions to the users themselves and overlooked you. I'd focus on the permissions themselves instead of the groups. If not, I would look for something like a firewall or IPS running on the server that might be preventing the connection.

You also didn't mention what types of connections you were attempting to make. If it is terminal services, you need to make sure that your user account has terminal services rights. Finally, if you can send me information about the actual error code you are getting, I might be able to narrow it down even better (this is also true for folks reading this who have a problem they are considering submitting; if you can send me the actual error codes it helps me give a more concise answer). Thanks!
