Q

Viewing hidden storage drives on a Windows 2000 machine

Site expert Kevin Beaver explains how you can view hidden storage drives on a Windows 2000 machine.

We are working in a group, but any person can operate the system (Windows 2000) and hide storage D drive and E drive. When we go to folder option → view → show all files, it does not show storage. What can we do?
There are a couple of questions that need to be answered before we can determine a solution:
  1. How are they hiding the drives?
  2. Is every user an administrator-equivalent?

You can go out to a command prompt and enter dir to see if you see the files/folders. You can also enter attrib

to see if you see them. If attrib shows them with an H (meaning hidden), then you can enter attrib filename/foldername –h to remove the hidden property. Just be careful with this and make sure you have good backups before doing anything with your file system.
