How do you stop users for playing streaming audio? Is it a port that I need to block, or do I need to block access to the Web sites? (We use Windows NT 4.0 Server, Microsoft Proxy Sever 2.0, Cisco 805 Router and SonicWall DMZ firewall on our Internet Server.)

First of all, you may be able to block some streaming media by blocking (or just not allowing) ports at the firewall. Windows Media Player uses port 1755, for example. However, many streaming audio players, Windows Media Player included, are capable of using a Web proxy and thus using HTTP and port 80. So if you allow Internet access at all, you cannot prevent some audio streaming by blocking ports.

Filtering by IP address will work, however, it will be a chore keeping up with it. You might want to consider one of the filtering products. They do the chore of finding the addresses of popular sites and can even update their filter automatically. In addition, you'll be able to set filters for other potential bandwidth abusers and other hazards. I'm not a big fan of any of the programs in particular, but you can locate dozens by simply searching on 'blocking streaming audio.'
