QUESTION POSED ON: 27 November 2002
I have a Windows 2000 Advanced Server that I've been securing using the Windows Update feature. In the past four months, I've run into a snag that has become more and more problematic as Microsoft moves its patching solutions to the "Windows Update" interface only.
What happens is that Windows Update will start, perform the scan of the server and come up with the required, recommended and new driver solutions. When I click on the "Review and Install" button, the download window will open, the licensing window will open, I can accept the licensing, the download progress bar will appear, but then nothing happens. Nothing will download.
I've tried all the solutions that I could find on TechNet and the Microsoft Knowledge Base including installing the latest VB scripting version 5.6 (and patch), clearing the temporary Internet files and history, clearing the Windows Update folder, creating a new WUHISTV3.LOG file, etc. -- all to no avail.
It used to be that I could install the patch by going directly to the MS Tech Bulletin and download it from that link, but lately MS has seen fit to only allow downloads via the Windows Update interface, which in my case doesn't seem to work. How can I either fix the Windows Update feature or obtain the patches? I'm starting to miss out on more and more patches. Thanks in advance.
