QUESTION POSED ON: 22 January 2004
I've recently been given a PC with Windows 2000 Professional. The previous owner is now dead, and I can't get past the initial dialog box which shows his name and asks for his password. Do I have any way of using this PC?

There is no default back door into Windows 2000. However, there are ways to make this computer a useful member of your family. Two basic options are: reinstall the operating system. Hopefully, you were provided with the original installation or OEM recovery disks for the operating system. The previous owner should have provided them as part of legally transferring ownership. Please be aware, I am not a lawyer; I am just providing my take on the process, but it doesn't take much knowledge to see it would be wrong to provide the OS on the box to one person, and then use the disks to load the OS on another machine.

If reinstallation is not an option for you, I suggest you invest in one of the password recovery (read password cracking) software programs or password replacement programs or services. These programs will either determine the original password (by brute force, essentially by trying all combinations of letters until the password is deduced) or by replacing the administrator password programmatically with one of your choice. Several sites offer these products such as: http://www.lostpassword.com/, http://www.winternals.pl/erdcommander.html, and http://www.elcomsoft.com/prs.html.

There are many others. These are simply representative and I make no warranty of their suitability for your situation.
