QUESTION POSED ON: 03 May 2004
How can I activate the ICF on a Windows 2003 Server and give users the option to connect themselves to a share?

>

The Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) will by default prevent access to shares on the server. If you want users to be able to access shares you can make a rule on the firewall.

  • Open network connections and double click on the connection.
  • Click the properties button.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • Check the box to "protect my computer and network by limiting or .. or preventing access to this computer from the Internet." This enables the firewall.
  • Click the Settings button.
  • Click the Add button.
  • Enter a name for the service.
  • Enter the IP address of the computer hosting the service, in this case the IP address or name of the local server.
  • Enter the external port 445 (for direct hosting).
  • Enter the internal port number 445.
  • Click OK twice to close the window and to close the advanced settings.
  • Close network settings.
