The following is the ITKnowledge Exchange Tip of the Week for Feb. 7, 2005.
Question
"Carl0s81" writes:
My question applies to both Windows 95 and 2000 machines. I work as a network manager for a school, and I want to lock the kids out so they can't change the Internet options in Internet Explorer! Can you help?
Responses
"bgilas" writes: Check out a product called Deep Freeze and its competitors. Basically you get your PC the way you want it, and then start up Deep Freeze. Users can make any changes they want, but a simple reboot wipes out all changes and returns PC to original condition.
"ciscocat6k" writes: You can also use Spybot -- Search & Destroy to lock the hosts file as well as IE options. You will need to go to the directory to run it, but it will totally lock the current users out of options if needed.
"TedRizzi" writes: Windows 2000 and XP machines can do this with Group Policy's in Active Directory. Under administrative templates you want to add inetres.adm. For Windows 95 you can do the same thing using poledit.
"ocarmona" writes: Have you looked into and studied all the options of Internet Explorer Administration Kit? Basically IEAK lets you customize Explorer your own way and deploy it.
