Microsoft has released a new cumulative fix for Internet Explorer 6.

The software maker announced the download on Tuesday and stressed that this latest bulletin is not security-related and does not contain any new updates that affect the security of IE. However, the collection of patches does include previous security updates.

The download is a cumulative update to Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1. The download addresses the way IE handles some Web pages that use ActiveX controls. This is not the first time Microsoft has issued fixes related to ActiveX. It released several security updates associated with the control technology in 2005.

This current release is in response to patent disputes with both the University of California and Eolas Technologies Inc. In 2004, a U.S. District Court decision said Microsoft violated a patent that defines how a Web browser can run plug-in applications. A higher court overturned that ruling, but the U.S. Patent Office deemed the case legitimate last fall. Microsoft expects another trial later this year.

A Microsoft advisory said the non-security update replaces security bulletin MS05-054, a cumulative update released last year that addressed several IE vulnerabilities.

Microsoft offered up another IE fix during its scheduled Patch Tuesday release early last month. That patch was for a flaw in IE 5.01 running on Windows 2000. This latest update is unrelated to February's Patch Tuesday release.
