IT shops that serve organizations that require open document formats will be a big beneficiary of an Office 2007 service pack released today.

Microsoft Office System 2007 Service Pack 2 lets end users open, edit and save documents in version 1.1 of the OpenDocument Format for Word, Excel and PowerPoint. These applications let users save, open and edit files as OpenDocument Text (*.odp) OpenDocument Spreadsheet (*.ods) and OpenDocument Presentations (*.odp), according to the company.

The service pack supports uninstall of client updates through the Microsoft Service Pack Uninstall Tool for the 2007 Microsoft Office Suite, and the Windows Installer command line. This tool is a separate download.

More on Microsoft Office 2007 service pack 2, Windows 7:
  • Windows 7 on track
  • Windows 7 beta hits, customers, VARs weight migration
  • Microsoft Vista, Office 2007 are here
  • Also, users can save as a PDF or XPS using technology built into Office applications. "IT shops no longer have to download and push out a PDF solution for Office 2007," said Rob Helm, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft, a Kirkland, Wash. consulting firm.

Although Office 2007 presented end users with a new interface, there was nothing so radical about it that led end users to cling to the previous version, Helm said. So in the next version of Office [2010], we expect
Microsoft to continue that interface and deepen
    it, Helm said.

Office 2010 is expected out in the first half of next year. It will have 32-bit and 64-bit versions, Microsoft has said.

Also, Microsoft has said that the release candidate for Windows 7 will be available May 5.
