The daring IT administrators who plan to upgrade right away to Windows 7.0 and Windows Server 2008 R2 can access the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 Beta 2 for help when installing the new software.

The Microsoft Development Toolkit (MDT) 2010 is recommended for automating desktop and server installation for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 as well as Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP.

Although MDT 2010 can be used to get the ball rolling for upgrades, the vast majority of IT pros wait until after the first service pack to install a new OS.

"We have no plans to upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 yet… [We're] going to let the dust settle on those before we begin to formally construct any migration plans," said David Reynolds, a systems manager for the Rhode Island Blood Center. "It's usually a good idea to try to hang in there until the first service pack comes out to fix a lot of the initial issues, and most IT professionals are hesitant to run the proverbial .0 version of anything."

But when Windows administrators are ready to roll out the new versions, MDT 2010 Beta 2 will offer more flexible driver management, a better user interface workflow (according to Microsoft) and Windows PowerShell for easier system administration and automation.

MDT 2010 Beta 2 also includes Deployment Workbench Enhancements, Configuration Manager Enhancements and Task Sequence and Script Enhancements. Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 Beta 2 can be downloaded now. Live ID login and registration is required.
