If you plan to upgrade to Windows 7 soon, you may want to download Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack 2009 R2, which will be released next month.

Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) is a set of six tools to help users migrating to Windows 7 deploy applications, and it removes application-incompatibility issues, according to Microsoft.

MDOP 2009 R2 adds Windows 7 support for all of its components, except for Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V), which will support Windows 7 in the first quarter of 2010. Server and management components within MDOP will support Windows 2008 R2, the company announced Monday.

The new version will include an updated application virtualization tool, App-V 4.5 SP1, that lets users deploy applications as centrally managed virtual services that do not have to be installed, never conflict and are streamed on demand to end users.

This new version of App-V includes Windows 7-specific capabilities, such as AppLocker integration, which lets IT set compliance policies for virtual applications, and BranchCache, which creates an automated infrastructure for caching documents at remote offices.

Advanced Group Policy Management (AGPM) 4.0 in MDOP 2009 R2 includes enhancements that let IT administrators control, review and track changes made to Group Policy Objects (GPOs). New features include the ability to manage group policies across different domain forests and the ability to filter GPOs according to various attributes, such as name, state or comments.

MDOP 2009 R2 will also include Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset 6.5 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, Desktop Error Monitoring (DEM) 3.5 for insight into application and operating system failures, with new reports for desktop monitoring. It also includes Asset Inventory Service (AIS) to map which applications are running in the existing environment before upgrading to Windows 7 and other features.

MED-V will let IT run applications that are not yet supported or tested on Windows 7 in a virtual Windows XP environment.

MDOP is available as an additional subscription for Software Assurance customers for less than $10 per desktop per year. It will be available in late October 2009 through the Microsoft Volume Licensing Site (MVLS)
