A refreshed version of Microsoft's Desktop Optimization Pack is now available with support for Windows 7, which is due out this week.

MDOP 2009 R2, which was released Tuesday, does not include a new version of Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V). MED-V 1.0 Service Pack 1 will support Windows 7 sometime in the first quarter of 2010. Server and management components in MDOP 2009 R2 will support Windows 2008 R2 immediately.

MDOP 2009 R2 includes Application Virtualization (App-V) 4.5 Service Pack 1 and new capabilities such as integration with the Windows 7 user interface, AppLocker policy integration, BranchCache, BitLocker ToGo and integration with third-party Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directories.

Other new capabilities in MDOP 2009 R2 include Advanced Group Policy Management (AGPM) 4.0, which has new features such as the ability to copy Group Policy Objects (GPOs) from one domain forest to another, even if the two domains are unconnected, and the ability to filter GPOs based on attributes such as name or comment.

The updated Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset (DaRT) 6.5 lets IT repair unbootable devices and recover data from them, and the Desktop Error Monitoring (DEM) 3.5 feature displays application and operating system failures and enables proactive troubleshooting.

MDOP 2009 R2 also includes tools to make the transition to Windows 7 a bit easier. The Asset Inventory Service (AIS) maps which applications are running in an environment, and it can consolidate license data from multiple locations.

MDOP is available as an additional subscription for Software Assurance customers for about $10 per desktop per year, according to Microsoft. Other licensing options are available on the company's website.

MDOP 2009 R2 will be available for subscribers through the Microsoft Volume Licensing Site (MVLS).
