Want to keep a date and time stamped list of events without spending any money? Good old Notepad can help.
Open Notepad and create a blank .TXT file. On the first line put the string ".LOG" (uppercase, without the quotes). Save the file in a convenient location. Whenever you open the file in Notepad, Notepad will move to the very end of the file and add the current date and time at the bottom, waiting for your event report, latest idea for a perpetual motion machine, reason for resigning this week or whatever you want!
I try to keep one of these on all my servers as a quick way to document various events that required manual intervention.
