LANDesk Workspaces helps simplify IT workflows with role-based portals

LANDesk Workspaces assigns users one of five profiles, including End User and IT Analyst, to deliver different IT resources and apps based on users' roles.

LANDesk Workspaces offers IT teams a single platform for delivering services to end users, including those users that need to access IT systems data and take action based on the information they find.

Workspaces provides users with dashboards for specific roles, based on how those individuals interact with IT systems and staff, and what business resources they need. Currently, LANDesk Workspaces supports five roles: End User, IT Analyst, Asset Manager, Security Administrator and Executive.

The dashboard for the End User role allows employees to access the information and tools they need to carry out IT-related actions such a requesting help from IT or downloading apps or software they need to get their work done. The other roles focus more on providing information about IT infrastructure.

A closer look at LANDesk Workspaces roles

End User. The End User role provides a centralized portal for end users to access IT resources, including a curated list of IT-approved apps. End users can also use Workspaces like a help desk to request IT assistance or use self-service features to take actions such as installing software or approved applications.

Workspaces provides its users with a dashboard for accessing the information and tools they need to carry out specific IT-related actions.

Ideally, the End User dashboard offers employees everything they need to interact with IT and allows them to download apps to their devices without having to ask IT to do it for them. For example, if a user needs to work with PowerPoint, but does not have it on her device, the user can download PowerPoint from LANDesk Workspaces assuming IT has approved it.

IT Analyst. The IT Analyst role provides IT pros with the information and tools to analyze and resolve IT-related issues. From their dashboards, IT Analysts can view data about end users and their devices. Plus, they can analyze the data to troubleshoot incidents, such as pushing apps to end users that can resolve their problems.

Asset Manager. The Asset Manager role provides hardware and software lifecycle data to monitor and manage assets. For example, Asset Managers can identify hardware they need to refresh or determine which software licenses they should reclaim. The Asset Manager role is instrumental in ensuring compliance or preparing for an audit.

For example, a dashboard might provide visualizations that present aggregated data from inside and outside the business, such as hardware or software information from internal systems as well as from the vendors that supply the hardware or software.


How to install LANDesk.

Security Administrator. Security Administrators can view security-related IT events to identify risks and detect potential threats. For example, they can review vulnerability scans from the last 30 days to determine the best approach for issuing patches and updates.

Executive. The Executive role provides high-level information on security risks, ROI and performance metrics to decision-makers so they can quickly assess the current state of the IT infrastructure and overall business.

The LANDesk Workspaces portal

Behind the scenes, Workspaces integrates the tools, processes and data sources IT needs to support each role, while using systems data related to end users, devices, security, software, hardware and other components. If a Workspaces user has multiple roles, it incorporates the information and tools each role supports into a single dashboard for that user.

Users can access Workspaces with any HTML5-enabled browser or download it on Windows PCs and Macs as well as Apple iOS and Google Android mobile devices. LANDesk Workspaces is built on industry web standards, with an HTML5 back-end service driving operations. The platform integrates with both Active Directory and other LANDesk products to identify groups, user types and their devices. Because of the Active Directory integration, Workspaces automatically authenticates users to their workspaces through their logins, without having to maintain separate accounts.

LANDesk Workspaces is offered as a free add-on to its products and services. It does not require additional resources or infrastructure. The exact manner in which the individual workspaces behave depends on which LANDesk products IT admins implement and how they choose to integrate Workspaces within those products.

Because it's free for LANDesk customers, taking Workspaces on a test drive could be worth the effort, at least on a small scale.
