Letter #1: Microsoft decisions have led to poor security

Microsoft's money would be better spent fixing the holes in its software than on a security product.

Our Editor in Chief Marilyn Cohodas posed some questions on the state of malware prevention in the industry to our readers in her weekly editorial. Below is one of the responses. Read the original editorial.

From L.M.

I seem to have these items pretty well controlled. I have XP PRO, but am using ZoneAlarm Pro firewall and McAfee VirusScan. I have tried PestPatrol and Aluria SpySweeper, but have since gone with the spyware features in ZoneAlarm.

As for the 'security' product from MS - the money would be better spent on fixing their software. I would not be too trusting of MS software that corrects bugs in MS software. Especially since it has been MS decisions that have caused many of the problems, i.e. giving Internet Explorer privileged access rights, forcing XP PRO users to either have Administrator privileges to run older software or having to invest in all new software that will run with limited privileges (if it can be found).
